Be great to be here to join discussions of new globalization!
The world is always changing for good or bad. However in these years, the world is changing for bad at least in terms of globalization.
Anti-globalization voice is rising, protectionism is rising, nationalism is rising, and unilateralism is rising.
More importantly and more dangerously, there are increasing mistrust and misunderstanding between major players of the world. There are deep mistrust between US and Russia, Russia and European Union, US and China, and Even between EU and UK, EU and US. The world order is definitely in turbulence and just like Chinese President XI Jinping once said, we are experiencing unprecedent great change not witnessed in one hundred years.
What we can do?
First of all, We must convinced or be persuaded that globalization and integration of different economies are in the interests of the most people of the world. That is not easy, because many people particularly poor people in advanced countries believe that globalization has deprived opportunities of their job and income enhancing which is the key reason why US president can mobilize support to launch trade war against China. Many years ago, Nobel prize winner in economics and former chief economist of World Bank Joe Stiglitz published a book titled “globalization and its the discontent”. He criticized strongly almost all policies of globalization including privatization, liberalization and free trade, all of these policies have created huge inequality of income and social injustice.
So how can we justify the globalization in terms of benefits of most people of the world particularly poor people in the world, and how can we think about and change our policies in order to make sure that most people of the world can get benefits from globalization. That ‘s great challenging for all countries but even more challenging for major countries, US, China, EU etc.
In this perspective, I’d like to propose four simple suggestions:
First, The international organizations like IMF, WB, WTO and UN should and must play much more important role in promoting coordination and cooperation of policies of different countries. And these organizations must need rethink and reflect their policies and results in the past decades.
Second, Multinational companies should and must play more important role in containing protectionism and discrimination in trade, investment, trans-national education and international mobility of people.
Third, International professionals should and must play much more important role in promoting integration of economies and containing protectionism through different ways including research, consulting, conference and participation in governance of international organizations.
Fourth, and the most important, domestic governments of all countries especially major countries like US, China,EU should and must reform their policies in order to prevent protectionism, promote free trade, integration of world economy.
