IFF Co-chairman Han Seung-soo elected Chairperson of the UNCPGA

Oct.24 - Dr. Han Seung-soo, Co-chairman of the International Finance Forum (IFF) and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, was elected the Chairperson of the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly (UNCPGA) on October 20, 2022. He will be serving a three-year term, according to the UN. 
 
 
The new leadership was elected at the UNCPGA’s annual meeting at the UN’s headquarters in New York.The UNCPGA with all living former presidents of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) as its members, is the highest forum for former UN leaders. Dr. Han served as the 56th president of the UN General Assembly from 2001 to 2002.
 
Members of the UNCPGA discussed a range of issues, including international peace and security, food and energy crises and climate change, which are on the agenda of the 77th Assembly.
 
Members emphasized the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation, through dialogue and diplomacy with a sense of urgency.
 
The Council urged the implementation of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Agency to address the food, energy, debt and environmental crises the world faces.
 
The UNCPGA decided to institutionalize its role as a permanent leadership forum for promoting multilateralism and international cooperation to promote a more effective United Nations.
 
During the annual meeting, members of the UNCPGA expressed their full support for the priorities of the President of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary-General for the work of the United Nations in the context of the current 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
 
The UNCPGA is committed to contributing to the efforts of the President of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary-General to reform and revitalize the UN.
