Accelerating methane emissions abatement:
the use of the Montreal Protocol

Wednesday, 9th November, 2022

On site: ICC Premises, Sharm El-Sheikh

Online: Videoconference on Zoom

 14:30 – 17:45 (local time)
(13:30 – 16:45 CET)

According to the International Energy Agency, methane has been contributing to 30% of the global rise in temperature. Reducing its emissions is “the most effective means available for limiting global warming”. A focus on fossil fuels, in particular, represents the fastest, cheapest, and best opportunity to fight global warming at minimum cost.

Many initiatives are already being taken, which are certainly welcome. But more could be done in the spirit of the Montreal Protocol which mobilised the firms emitting ozone depleting substances and thereafter saved the ozone layer and has been arguably the most successful climate mechanism yet put in place.

Why not mobilise the oil and gas industry worldwide in the spirit of the Montreal Protocol, reinforced by the introduction of a market for methane giving it a price, and hence act as a strong incentive for phasing out methane? By accelerating the agenda of the necessary investments, modelling actions by industry and governments would significantly contribute to limiting the rise of temperature.

This side event of COP27 has been co-organised by the International Finance Forum and is hosted by the International Chamber of Commerce.

PART 3: THE RANGE OF ACTIONS UNDERWAY BOTH FROM GOVERNMENTS AND INDUSTRY SHOULD BE COMPLEMENTED BY THE INTRODUCTION OF A GLOBAL MARKET FOR METHANE

National implementations and industry actions have been creating a momentum for a decisive global initiative to phase out methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. This initiative can come only from a strong incentive created by the introduction of a market for methane within a global agreement in the spirit of the Montreal Protocol.
